Created the hot hatch segment, combining practicality with performance. Started as an unofficial skunkworks project by VW engineers. The GTI badge and tartan seats became iconic. The original 1.6 liter made only 108 hp but weighed almost nothing. Over 2.5 million GTIs sold across eight generations. The GTI is still the benchmark every hot hatch is measured against.
